What Is Walk and Talk Therapy?

Walk and Talk Therapy is a form of counseling in which you and your therapist walk outdoors together during your session instead of spending the entire time in a traditional office. This approach can reduce anxiety, improve emotional processing, and create a more natural flow of conversation. Sessions are available at both our 8th Avenue and Haile Village locations and are tailored to your comfort, pace, and therapeutic goals.

How Is It Different From Traditional Therapy?

Both approaches use evidence-based counseling techniques provided by licensed therapists. The main difference is the environment. Instead of sitting across from your therapist, you walk side by side at a comfortable pace. Many clients find that walking:

  • Reduces social pressure
  • Encourages more open conversation
  • Helps organize thoughts
  • Calms nervous system activation
  • Increases mindfulness

Why People Choose Walk and Talk Therapy

People often seek Walk and Talk Therapy when they:

  • Spend most of the day indoors
  • Enjoy nature
  • Feel anxious or restless in traditional therapy offices
  • Struggle to open up or feel awkward sitting face to face
  • Feel emotionally “stuck”
  • Experience chronic stress, burnout, or ADHD
  • Think more clearly while moving
  • Want therapy that feels less clinical
  • Prefer holistic or mind-body approaches to mental health
  • Experience low mood or depression symptoms
  • Want to integrate more physical movement into their day

Benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy

Research on physical movement, nature exposure, and nervous system regulation suggests outdoor therapy can support emotional well-being in several ways. While every session is individualized, many clients appreciate combining evidence-based psychotherapy with the restorative benefits of being outdoors. Potential benefits include:

  • Reduced anxiety and stress. Gentle movement and fresh air can help regulate the nervous system and lower stress hormones such as cortisol.
  • Improved mood. Walking outdoors may lift mood, increase energy, and reduce feelings of emotional heaviness.
  • Easier emotional processing. Movement can help thoughts and emotions flow more freely, so many people reflect more clearly while walking.
  • Increased mind-body awareness. Walking encourages a stronger connection between physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts.
  • A more comfortable therapy experience. Some clients feel less pressure and vulnerability talking side by side instead of face to face.

What Happens During a Session?

A Walk and Talk session works much like a traditional therapy appointment:

  • We meet at one of our two Sage Wellness locations and walk nearby in Cofrin Park (8th Ave location) or along the walking paths of Haile Plantation (Haile Village location), both with plenty of trees and shade.
  • We start in the office, where you can leave your belongings. Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are encouraged.
  • We walk at a comfortable, relaxed pace.
  • Breaks or pauses can be taken anytime. You choose whether to walk for part or all of the session.

Therapy remains confidential, collaborative, and tailored to your needs.

What Concerns Can Walk and Talk Therapy Help With?

Walk and Talk Therapy may support people experiencing anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, life transitions such as a breakup, divorce, or retirement, relationship concerns, emotional overwhelm, and work or academic pressure. It is available to adults through individual therapy, to teens through kids and teens counseling, and to UF and Santa Fe students. Explore all of our counseling services or meet our therapists.
